In the mid-60's, young Jake Burton was one of thousands of kids across the world that started surfing on snow.  To the casual observer one would think this would be a novelty sure to disappear into the night.  But young Jake snow surfing on the outskirts of Burlington, Vermont was convinced this gig was here to stay.  And thus in 1977 Jake launched the world’s first snowboard factory leveraging a grassroots effort and making unique custom snowboards. 

In the early years Jake and a group of four to five people worked out his living room making, selling and repairing their custom snowboards.  There was a clear demand for some of the classic Burton custom snowboards such as the Backhill and Performer from the first moment they opened up their makeshift factory.  Their toll-free phone rang off of the hook from customers from the far reaches of the globe from the Alps to the Rockies.  The Burton team even went as far as setting up local “Snowboarding Safaris” showcasing their latest custom snowboard designs.  An instant hit to say the least.

By 1982 Jake Burton managed to convince local ski lifts to snowboarders and the rest is history.  By this year Jake started producing snowboards to adapt to the local hard packed snow conditions of the ski resorts with the Performer Elite, a board with a P-tex base, metal edges and binding with hi-backs.

In 1992, Burton Custom Snowboards moved from its Manchester location to its permanent and current location in Burlington, Vermont.  Jake from the start of his journey and to this day is committed to making the world’s best custom snowboards, equipment and apparel and additionally growing the snowboarding sport.   Since 1992 Burton Custom Snowboards have opened up a factory in Urawa-shi, Japan and opened up Gravis Footwear that creates footwear, bags and accessories rooted in the snowboard and surf lifestyles.  But Jake’s efforts did not stop there he went on to launch several more companies from eye ware optics to the Analog Clothing retail line.

Every Burton Custom Snowboard goes through a meticulous manufacturing process from the development of the core with a specially designed Engineered Grain Direction (EGD) wood core that determines it’s riding characteristics to the artistic timeless screen print that looks great.
